P2P — person-to-person — SMS is the original use of text messaging: one subscriber texting another from a handset. Carriers exchange P2P traffic under bilateral agreements that are effectively settlement-free, on the assumption that traffic flows roughly evenly both ways between consumer bases. P2P messages face almost no filtering, no sender registration, and no per-message termination fees — the polar opposite of the A2P regime.
That asymmetry is why the P2P/A2P boundary is policed. Commercial senders have long tried to push application traffic through P2P channels — SIM boxes full of consumer SIMs, “P2P-rated” grey routes — because it dodges A2P termination fees. Carriers respond with SMS firewalls that fingerprint traffic patterns: a “person” sending ten thousand identical messages with an OTP template is not a person. For legitimate platforms the line is simple: if software composes or triggers the message, it is A2P and must be sent as A2P, or it will eventually be blocked and the sender reputation burned.
Why it matters
Misclassified traffic is a time bomb: routes that carry disguised A2P get shut down without notice, taking your OTP delivery with them. Understanding the P2P/A2P boundary explains both why compliant routes cost real money and why the cheap alternative periodically stops delivering.
